Fill a pot about 1/3 of the way with water and begin heating on the stove while you calculate the amount of wax you will need.
Place the vessel you would like to use on a food scale and tare it. Then fill the vessel with water until you reach the level you’d like your candle to fill to. Record the weight of the water in grams on a piece of paper. Continue this process with any other vessels you’d like to use.
Multiply the water volume amount by 0.85 and record the number you get. Do this for all the vessels you will be using and add the total of each together. This is the amount of wax you will need.
Measure out the amount of wax you need in your glass or metal canister and place into warm pot of water to create a type of double boiler.
If using fragrance, you can calculate how much you will need by multiplying the wax needed number by 0.05 or 0.10 if you want a heavily scented candle.
Allow the wax to melt until completely dissolved. To secure your wicks to the bottom of your jars, dip the metal part of the wicks into some of the hot wax. Allow it to begin to cool for about 5 seconds and then press into the bottom of the jar and hold in place until the wax has hardened and the wick is secured.
Heat the wax until it reaches between 190-200°F. Once it has reached this temperature, remove the wax from the heat and stir in your fragrance if using. Allow the wax to cool to 120-130°F.
With the wicks secured by either a pencil or your wick holders, slowly pour the cooled wax into your vessels. You should have exactly enough wax to fill your jars with no waste.
Allow your candles to “cure” for 24 hours for best results. Before burning, trim wicks to 1/2 inch and enjoy your lovely homemade soy wax candles!
