Is there a difference between regular broth and bone broth?

While there are some similarities between regular broth or stock and bone broth, there are a lot of differences also.

Regular broth is usually made by cooking meat in water. It can be gelatinous like bone broth depending on the type of meat used, but lacks some of the key nutrients found in bone broth.

Bone broth is made by cooking bones in the water for a long period of time. This draws out many of the harder to reach nutrients that regular broth or meat stock lack.

Can I drink bone broth on its own?

You can absolutely drink bone broth on its own! In fact, many companies are profiting off of the rise in popularity of bone broth and sell drinkable cups or even pouches made to be mixed with hot water to create a convenient option for bone broth on the go.

While it’s great that these companies see the value in the health benefits behind bone broth, you can save yourself a lot of money by making your own and filling your mug yourself!

How to Make This Simple Bone Broth Recipe

Step 1 – Place bones (2-4 lbs), water (4-6 quarts), salt (1 tbsp), vegetable scraps (if using) and apple cider vinegar (2 tbsp) in either an instant pot, slow cooker or stovetop pot.
Step 2 – If using Instant Pot, set it to the Soup/Broth function for 4 hours. If using a slow cooker or stovetop pot, simmer on low heat for 12-24 hours.
